NRC To Hold Public Meeting On Monticello Safety

MONTICELLO, Minn. (AP) — Officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting Monday night to discuss its latest safety review for Xcel Energy's nuclear power plant in Monticello.

Overall, the NRC found that the Monticello plant operated safely in 2013. But its annual assessment also found some problems that have led to greater oversight. The most significant safety issue involved the plant's failure to have procedures in place to fully address the effects of an external flooding scenario. The NRC says plant has taken corrective actions to address the violation.

NRC regional administrator Cynthia Pederson says she and commission staff will address public questions and concerns about its findings and its regulatory actions during the meeting.

It's scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Monticello Community Center.
