Two injured when driver rear-ends car into passing train near Minneapolis' Columbia Park

Cars collide near Columbia Park in northeast Minneapolis

Investigators say two people were injured when a driver rear-ended another vehicle at a rail crossing, pushing them both into a passing train overnight Wednesday near Columbia Park in northeast Minneapolis.

Officers responded to the crash just after 2:30 a.m. and arrived to find two heavily damaged vehicles.

The Minneapolis Police Department says preliminary information indicates a woman driving a Cadillac Escalade had been stopped at a railroad crossing on Central Avenue Northeast as a train passed. That's when a man driving a Toyota Rav4 struck the Cadillac from behind, pushing both cars into the train.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to Hennepin Healthcare with apparent life-threatening injuries, according to Minneapolis police. The woman who drove the Cadillac suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening and was also transported to Hennepin Healthcare.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the crash and whether intoxication may have been a factor.

No arrests have been made and no citations have been issued in connection with the crash.
