MPD: Man Shot By Officer In Minneapolis Has Died
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating after a man was shot and killed by police.
Just before 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, someone called 911 from the 3700 block of Morgan Avenue North about a person reportedly suicidal.
Shortly after officers arrived, they encountered a man with a weapon outside of a home.
"All of our officers working the street are trained in de-escalation and there are just times when, in fact, that is not an option," said Minneapolis Police spokesperson John Elder.
At some point, police shot the man and he was taken to North Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
The man's identity has not been released, as well as what kind of weapon he was carrying.
It's still unclear how many officers fired shots.
"There is no officer that comes to work, wanting to harm and kill someone," said Elder.
The body cameras of the officers involved in this shooting were turned on and rolling during all of this, and that video may prove to be an important clue as to what led up to the shooting.
Mayor Jacob Frey says he will be working with Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo to learn more about what happened.
"Regardless of the information that comes forth, our city mourns a life lost and grieves with a family and community in pain," Frey said in a written statement.
The BCA will investigate the shooting, as is standard practice.
