Nonprofit To Open Hospice Care Center For Kids In Honor Of Former Twin
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minnesota Twins legend's legacy grew a bit more Saturday night.
Harmon Killebrew was an advocate for hospice care. In honor of the late Killebrew, the nonprofit Children's Lighthouse is working to open up the first hospice home for kids in Minnesota
Harmon's widow, Nita, was at Target Field Saturday to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Children's Lighthouse provides care to children who need the most help.
Currently, there are 9,000 families in Minnesota who are in need of hospice and respite support.
"Regular hospices will accommodate them to some extent, but they don't have the facilities to take of the kids and their families. And sometimes the parents just need respite," Nita said.
There are three child hospice centers in the country.
Children's Lighthouse of Minnesota hopes to break ground on the facility next year.
