NEXT Weather: October starts with record-setting heat

NEXT Weather: 10 p.m. report from Oct. 1, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS — Sunday is the first day of October, and the month is off to a blazing start with record-setting heat.

The average high for this time of year is 66 degrees. Early Sunday evening, the National Weather Service says the Twin Cities hit 92 degrees — the hottest October temperature on record in the metro. The previous record of 90 was set in 1928, and it happened again in 1997. The metro now has had 33 days this year in the 90s — which is 20 days above average.

The Twin Cities Marathon was canceled just hours before it was set to start Sunday due to the expected heat.

The hot start to the new month follows a trend set in September, which was the warmest on record for the Twin Cities

Fall is the second fastest warming season in Minnesota as the state deals with the impact of climate change.  There are now 20 more above-average fall days in the Twin Cities, according to WCCO's NEXT Weather team.

Monday and Tuesday will stay warm, with dew points falling and highs in the 80s both days. Monday's forecasted high of 87 is just three degrees short of the daily record. Monday's overnight low may also set a record.

Widespread rain and possible storms will span from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. By the end of the week, highs will fall to the 60s, and next weekend we'll top out in the upper 50s.
