November snow storm: Nearly 400 crashes on Minnesota roads; 100+ flights canceled at MSP

MINNEAPOLIS -- Crews will be clearing piles 8-inches deep in parts of the Twin Cities after Tuesday's big snow storm.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. there were more than 387 crashes, 285 vehicle spinouts and 33 jackknifed semis. There were 38 injuries involved in the crashes, but none of them were serious. No fatal crashes have been reported.

Just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, a stretch of northbound Interstate 694 was closed in Oakdale after a semi jackknifed, and then dangled over 34th Street North. The semi was cleared about 90 minutes later, and the state patrol says the driver suffered "non-life threatening injuries."  

Flights are getting back on track after a tough Tuesday for many travelers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. About 100 flights were canceled and 200 more were delayed.

Most flights that were able to take off Tuesday afternoon had to go through the de-icing procedure.

At the height of the storm, all the runways were closed from about 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. For travelers flying Wednesday, airport managers say there is a ripple effect following a storm delay.

"Certainly I think it's going to be a busy morning with the hundreds of passengers we expect that are spending an extra night in the Twin Cities, along with those that are already scheduled to be on flight [Wednesday]," said Jeff Lea with the Metropolitan Airports Commission.

If there is a silver lining, it's a good thing the storm didn't hit 48 hours ago. Sunday was the fourth busiest day at the airport since the pandemic began.
