New Plan To Treat Lakes Recently Infested With Zebra Mussels

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The DNR has a new plan to treat lakes where zebra mussels have recently been discovered.

The first lake to receive the test treatment is Ruth Lake in Crow Wing County. Just one zebra mussel was found there in July.

Last winter, the DNR treated a section of Christmas Lake in Shorewood.

By the end of summer, they discovered zebra mussels in a new part of the lake.

The new treatment process uses an EPA-approved pesticide in small areas of an infested lake. It also calls for faster response to treating infestations.

The DNR is asking people to check their docks, lifts, and other water equipment for zebra mussels as they close up their cabins for winter.
