New Evidence Leads To Arrests In 1999 Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- New evidence had led to an arrest and new charges in a deadly shooting from 15 years ago.

Hennepin County prosecutors say in July of 1999, Earl Vang and Tou Lu Yang killed Miguel McElroy and hurt his father. It was part of a gang-related drug deal.

Yang has been behind bars since the crime on second-degree murder charges. New witness testimony and evidence linked Vang to the murder.

"DNA left in 1999 which could not be tested, because the amount was small, can be tested today," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Both men face eight charges, including first and second degree murder.

If convicted, the men would face up to 60 years in prison for the deadly shooting.
