NDDOT Adds Extra Enforcement Against Distracted Driving
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota transportation officials say that law enforcement officers throughout the state worked more than 300 hours of overtime last month in a campaign to deter distracted driving.
The state Department of Transportation says the added patrols in September resulted in 318 citations, including 149 for distracted driving. The state's texting law carries a $100 fine.
DOT spokeswoman Karin Mongeon (MOH'-zhawn) says annual surveys have shown that distracted driving is becoming an increasing problem in the state and the campaign is meant to save lives.
Funding for the program is provided by federal money distributed through the DOT.
