National Night Out Events Planned Across Minnesota Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's National Night Out across the country and Minnesota tends to lead the nation in participation.

The annual event brings the community together.

"You are going to see hundreds, if not thousands, of block parties involving neighbors, local police, firefighters," Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said.

Stanek said it's about building a community by getting to know your neighbor and meeting with local law enforcement. He said hundreds of officers, deputies and firefighters will be visiting the block parties.

They'll be handing out red wristbands.

"These red wristbands that the residents are going to receive say 'trust, change, together, 2016.' Very few words, but I think very powerful message," Stanek said.

The sheriff hopes the message will promote a partnership and trust.
