N.C. Man Runs TC Marathon For First Time, Wins It

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The winner of the 33rd annual Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon was a 26-year-old man from North Carolina who'd never run a marathon before.

Tyler Pennel took the race with a time of 2 hours and 13 minutes and 33 seconds, marathon officials said.

It was his first time running a marathon.

Pennel was about a 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Jared Ward. He was about a minute ahead of third place finisher, Scott Smith.

The women's winner was 28-year-old Esther Erb, of Virginia. Her time was 2 hours and 38 minutes. Her nearest competitor, Heather Lieberg, was just .08 seconds behind.

When the race started, the temperatures was a chilly 37 degrees in Minneapolis.
