Multi-Vehicle Crash Closes I-35 Near Lakeville For Hours

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Just a few hours of light snow Friday was enough to set off a chain reaction pile-up on Interstate 35 south of the Twin Cities.

The accident occurred on the northbound lanes of I-35 at County Road 50 near Lakeville, Minn.

WCCO's Nina Moini spoke with Fatima Sayedi, a driver involved in the crash, who said people tried to slow down after the initial crash but struggled to do so because of the conditions and snow.

"Everybody was slowing down but the snow was coming down so hard it was all white, so no one could see what's going on," Sayedi said.

She was just a few miles from home when the pileup happened in Lakeville near County Road 50 on I-35.

The traffic jam happened after a semi-tanker crashed into a ditch. Then, a chain reaction occurred and dozens of cars collided.

"There was a lot of people hurt, um, people couldn't get out of their cars," Sayedi said.

At least one car was flipped over.

After two hours, state patrol reopened the roads and tow trucks cleared the cars.

No serious injuries or fatalities were immediately reported.
