Mpls. Teen Paralyzed By Stray Bullet Thanks Doctors
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- In November 2010, 12-year-old Guadalupe Galeno-Hernandez was paralyzed after being hit by a stray bullet which went through her throat and severed her spine.
She spent a month at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, and then six months at St. Paul's Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare.
On Saturday morning, Galeno-Hernandez and her family will meet with those who've supported her through four years of recovery at an event called "A Celebration of Life" at the BMO Harris Bank on East Lake Street.
V.J. Smith is president of the organization.
"You know, it's really hard to be a victim of violence at a young age, so we really want to help her out," Smith said.
He says Galeno-Hernandez wants to thank the doctors who helped save her life.
"She's got a great spirit. She has a great family," Smith said. "She's limited now, and has her days."
Galeno-Hernandez says she wants to be become a teacher.
MADDADS is sponsoring the event, which will be held at 320 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. It runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
