MPCA: Disposable Wipes Should Have 'No Flush' Warning

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is calling for a "do not flush" warning on so-called "flushable" sanitary wipes.

This comes after years of complaints that the wipes are clogging local sewer systems.

The town of Avon sent out a flyer to residents in 2013 which urged them not to flush any wipes.

Officials say the disposable wipes are about 45-percent plastic and do not break down the same way as toilet paper in the wastewater system.

City officials are asking lawmakers to take action on the proposal during the upcoming legislative session.
