Motorcycle Crash Closes I-494 In South Metro

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A portion of a highway in the south metro was closed Saturday afternoon due to a motorcycle crash.

Interstate 494 is closed between Highway 169 and Prairie Center Drive near Edina, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The State Patrol said an Edina police officer attempted to stop a speeding motorcyclist on Highway 100. The motorcyclist. a 50-year-old man from Crystal, fled west on Interstate 494 and the officer pursued him.

Eventually, the officer called off the pursuit. The motorcyclist continued to speed and exited 494 at 169 south. He struck the cement barrier, was ejected and landed on 494.

State Patrol later identified the motorcyclist as Christoper Lee Sundholm. Sundholm was killed in the crash.

MnDOT said the highway would likely be closed until about 6:30 p.m.

The ramp from northbound 169 to westbound 494 is also closed.
