Monks' Files In Abuse Settlement Released By St. John's Abbey
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- St. John's Abbey has released thousands of pages of documents revealing decades of sexual abuse towards minors by 18 different monks.
The Abbey says the incidents detailed in the files all happened more than two decades ago.
The documents provide details of the incidents, the monk's psychological evaluations, and how the Abbey confronted the misconduct.
The release of the documents is part of the Abbey's settlement last year with a man who said he was abused by a monk as a teenager in 1977.
The files show the Abbey knew of multiple abuse claims at the prep school -- and other locations across the state -- for years before the allegations came to light.
The files include seven monks who still live on the St. John's campus and are under close supervision. Of the remainder, nine monks have died, and two others have since left the Abbey.
St. John's says since the allegations of abuse first came to light, they have taken specific actions to stop and prevent more cases.
