Former VP Mondale, Who Once Made History Himself, At DNC With MN Dems

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Former Vice President Walter Mondale is in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention, and will be there when Hillary Clinton formally accepts the Democratic nomination Thursday night.

But Mondale himself made history when he selected Geraldine Ferraro to be his running mate more than 30 years ago.

In 1984, Ferraro took the stage at the Democratic National Convention -- the first woman to ever be selected as a Vice Presidential nominee. Now, Hillary Clinton will formally accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United State of America.

"Both are significant steps, but this is clearly the biggest step we're taking at this convention, and hopefully the public will support us," Mondale said in an phone interview from Philadelphia.

Mondale says he still hears from people about the decision to name Ferraro in 1984.

"She leaves a wonderful legacy, in terms of progress and openness and justice," he said.

Mondale says he'll be sitting with the Minnesota contingent tonight, including Governor Mark Dayton, when Clinton accepts the nomination.
