MN Man Accused Of Trying To Join ISIS Pleads Guilty

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis teenager accused of trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Abdullahi Yusuf entered the plea Thursday to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

The 18-year-old Yusuf admitted in court that he attended meetings in Minnesota last March and April in which participants discussed fighting against Syrian President Bashar Assad. Yusuf was arrested in November, six months after FBI agents stopped him at the Minneapolis airport as he was attempting to leave the U.S. for Turkey.

Authorities say a handful of Minnesotans have traveled to Syria to fight with militants. Yusuf had been released to a halfway house while his case was pending.
