MLS, Minnesota United Owner To Make 'Major Announcement'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Major League Soccer (MLS) and Bill McGuire, the owner of the Minnesota United FC soccer team, are scheduled to make a "major announcement" this week concerning the future of soccer in Minnesota.

The announcement is slated to take place at noon on Wednesday at Target Field's Carew Atrium.

While the content of the announcement remains unclear, MLS and Minnesota United were in "advanced discussions" earlier this month in regards to bringing the Minnesota team into the league as an expansion club.

Currently, Minnesota United play in the North American Soccer League.

The team has plans to create an outdoor, soccer-specific stadium near the downtown Minneapolis farmers market.

"MLS leadership is well aware that the passionate soccer fans in Minnesota combined with a world-class, soccer-specific stadium make the Twin Cities and our state a perfect home for the next MLS expansion team," Minnesota United said in a recent statement.
