Missing Boater On Lake Vermilion Found Safe

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in northern Minnesota say a boater who was missing since Sunday morning was found "safe and in good health."

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says Frank Achter was found Monday morning on Hoyt Island, near Smart Bay.

Achter, 66, had gone missing Sunday morning after renting a boat form the Vermilion Dam Lodge. When he did not return after a couple hours, lodge staff went looking for him.

Achter experienced trouble with the boat early in the day, the sheriff's office said. As a result, he sought shelter in a cabin on Hoyt Island until his boat was found by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.

As a precautionary measure, emergency crews brought Achter to Cook Hospital for an evaluation.
