Gibson's Return Delayed With Stiff Back, Hughes Starts For Twins Vs. Rays

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have delayed right-hander Kyle Gibson's return from the disabled list because of stiffness in his back, bringing Phil Hughes back from the bullpen before he ever pitched in relief.

The Twins announced Thursday before their game against Tampa Bay that Hughes would start instead of Gibson, who was on track to be activated and pitch against the Rays. Gibson made four starts in April but has been out with a strained right shoulder since then.

Hughes is 1-7 with a 5.74 ERA in 10 starts this season. After he allowed nine hits, three walks and four runs in 4 2/3 innings in his last turn at Seattle, the Twins announced he was moving to the bullpen.
