Minnesota State Named Preseason WCHA Favorite

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota State, Mankato has been picked first in both the Western Collegiate Hockey Association coaches and media preseason hockey polls.

The Mavericks are the defending Broadmoor Trophy champion for winning the WCHA playoffs in March. Ferris State, which won the league's regular season title before falling to MSU in the Final Five Championship, was picked to finish second in both polls.

Both teams were in the NCAA Tournament last year, with the Bulldogs advancing to the second round.

WCHA coaches picked Michigan Tech to finish third while the media favored Bowling Green to finish third.

Ferris State goalie C.J. Motte was selected as the league's Preseason Player of the Year by WCHA coaches. Minnesota State senior forward Matt Leitner was the media's choice.
