Minnesota Opera To Premiere 'The Shining' In May

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Opera presents the world premiere of "The Shining" next month.

The new opera is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel. Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec composed the music while Mark Campbell wrote the libretto.

Baritone Brian Mulligan creates the role of Jack Torrance, who terrorizes his family as he descends into madness as winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Soprano Kelly Kaduce sings the role of Torrance's wife, Wendy. Fifth-grader Alejandro Vega makes his Minnesota Opera debut as Danny, the couple's son who has a strong psychic ability known as "the shining."

"The Shining" concludes the Minnesota Opera's 2015-2016 season. The opera premieres at the Music Theater at the Ordway in St. Paul May 7. Tickets range from $25 to $200.
