ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Republican Party of Minnesota says it's chipping away at a pile of debt that still exceeds $1 million.

The party announced Tuesday that it will report holding $1.25 million in debt halfway through 2015. That's down from more than $1.5 million earlier this year but roughly level with the party's debt from more than a year ago.

Federal campaign finance reports for the party are expected to be released next week. Similar state reports won't be published until later this year.

Minnesota's GOP has struggled with debt since 2011 when the costs of a gubernatorial election recount. At one point its outstanding obligations neared $2 million.

Party treasurer Bron Scherer says the GOP is making progress and setting up for the 2016 election.
