With Cleveland's Win, Minnesota Now Tied For Longest Championship Drought

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- On Sunday night, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Championship, ending the city's 52-year stretch without a title from any of its three major sports teams.

But that's bad news for Minnesota.

With Cleveland's drought finally ended, Minnesota is now tied with Washington, D.C. for the longest current stretch without a championship in men's professional sports of markets with at least three teams. The last league victory the city saw was with the Minnesota Twins winning the World Series in 1991. For D.C., it was the Redskins winning the Super Bowl that same year.

In the WNBA, however, the Minnesota Lynx remain dominant. They won championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015, and are currently undefeated, on a 12-0 streak.

The Minnesota Vikings last saw a title with the NFL Championship in 1969, before the birth of the Super Bowl.

Washington, D.C. has seen its own sort of winning as well, from D.C. United who brought home the MLS cup in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004.
