Minneapolis Marathon Canceled Due To Weather Concerns

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials announced Sunday morning that the Minneapolis Marathon had to be canceled due to weather concerns as rain and lightning took over the Twin Cities overnight.

The race was originally scheduled for 6:30 a.m. in Minneapolis, but the start was delayed one hour to see if conditions improved at all. Race officials decided shortly after 8 a.m. that the marathon had to be canceled due to a public safety threat. Officials said with lightning strikes on the course and more rain and lightning expected by the time the race finishes, the decision was necessary.

Some runners have decided to run their own marathon anyway. The race was supposed to start at Theodore Wirth Parkway and finish in downtown Minneapolis. It's not known if the race will be rescheduled.
