Minneapolis Man, 62, Killed In Light Rail Train Accident

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities said a 62-year-old Minneapolis man was killed Sunday night after being hit by a light rail train.

John Siqveland with Metro Transit said the accident happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday near 42nd Street East and Hiawatha Avenue. The train, which was headed southbound, was carrying passengers when it hit the pedestrian.

At the time of the incident, the gate arms controlling the intersection were in the lowered position. The train came to a stop a short distance beyond the intersection after striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the man as Michael Frederick Kwosek. He died of multiple blunt force injuries associated with the incident.

Metro Transit officials said what led up to the accident is still under investigation. It's the 10th fatal accident on the light rail line since it began operating in June 2004.
