Mpls. Police Searching For Suspect Following Northside Homicide

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A police welfare check in north Minneapolis Thursday morning turned into a murder investigation. It's the 31st homicide of the year in the city.

At about 9:30 a.m., officers arrived at the apartment building at the corner of Glenwood and Knox avenues, where they found a man dead inside.

It was a call from the building manager that sent police to the ground floor apartment inside the building in the Harrison neighborhood of north Minneapolis.

Corey Schmidt, a Minneapolis police spokesperson, says the 49-year-old victim died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Building residents were forced outside when officers went inside to investigate.

"We have officers who are out talking with residents who live in the neighborhood as well as other people who live in the apartment building to try and figure out what happened here this morning," Schmidt said.

Investigators do not know what time the man was killed.

Residents did not want to go on camera.

At least two told WCCO they did not hear gunshots during the night, three other residents said they heard as many as seven gunshots.

They said they were concerned but did not call police.

Neighbors say they've noticed an uptick in traffic inside the building and that the security door is sometimes propped open at all hours of the night.

"This is a controlled access building, however, we would not be able to predict whether or not that building was secure at the time or if someone had left the door open," Schmidt said. "So, that is something we are going to be looking at through the investigation."

Police hope four cameras posted on the building will help them in finding a suspect.

The Hennepin County coroner's office will release the name of the victim.

Anyone with any information about this crime is asked to call Minneapolis police.
