Minneapolis closes all outdoor ice rinks

Minnesotans adjust winter plans amidst January thaw

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has closed all outdoor ice rinks until further notice.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board says staff worked tirelessly to prep the rinks for skaters but the unseasonably warm weather would not allow for it. The board also added another update will be sent out pending changes in the forecast that would allow for outdoor rinks to reopen.

The board will be performing an audit on broomball and hockey leagues after a final decision is made on the season. As stated in broomball and hockey league bulletins, all teams will be credited for canceled games.

The annual ice skating party on Lake of the Isles had to be shut down, so the neighborhood association moved the party to land, still serving up hot chocolate and treats.

"People are enjoying themselves. They're saying hi to their neighbors who they might only normally see in the summer time," Quinton Quartz said.

In St. Paul, the warm weather affected the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Carnival staff had to dismantled part of an ice throne because it was melting and they wanted to avoid anyone getting hurt.

"It's a little different with the ice sculptors and snow sculptors not being able to hold up as well, but things are happening," said Michael Sawyer, Chair of the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Chad Peterson can sculpt ice in every kind of weather after participating in the carnival for the last 20 years. This year, he's sculpting differently to make sure nothing breaks off.

"It's a crap shoot for the weather. Last year was a little too cold for us. This year it's obviously too warm," Peterson said.
