Van Driver Killed In Head-On Crash With School Bus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota State Patrol says a driver was killed after a wrong-way crash involving a school bus in Wabasha County Friday morning.

According to the patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. one mile north of Minnieska.

A Chrysler van being driven by 27-year-old Travis Jacobson, of Winona, was heading north in the southbound lane of Highway 61.

The van then struck a school bus heading in the opposite direction. The van caught on fire; eventually, so did the bus.

The State Patrol said no kids were on the bus. The 57-year-old bus driver -- Vernon Andrews, of Ellsworth, Wisconsin -- was not injured.

Highway 61 was closed for about four and a half hours Friday morning while crews investigated and cleaned up the scene.
