Minn. House Passes Bill That Could Cut Pay Of Tipped Workers
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Lawmakers in the Minnesota House have passed a bill that could cut the minimum wage for thousands of tipped workers.
The bill allows restaurants to pay servers a lower minimum wage if they make $12 an hour or more with tips. The proposal passed 73-to-56 late Wednesday night.
According to state numbers, there are about 39,000 minimum wage workers in the food and beverage industry.
Supporters of the bill say without this change, restaurants and bars could be forced out of business by higher labor costs as the state's minimum wage rises to $9.50 per hour by 2016 and then increases with inflation after that.
