Minn. Disability Council: Please Keep Sidewalks Clear

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's been a rough winter to get around for everyone, but it can be especially tough for people with disabilities.

The Minnesota State Council on Disability reminded people Friday about the importance of clearing out sidewalks, curbs and transit stops.

Council member Colleen Casey says people with disabilities, like herself, need a clear path to be able get to work, school or the grocery store.

"My primary form of transportation is the bus, and when sidewalks and bus shelters are cleared of snow then I can navigate," Casey said. "But otherwise, it becomes very dangerous."

After issuing an initial warning for noncompliance, both Minneapolis and St. Paul will fine homeowners and business that have not sufficiently cleared their sidewalks of snow and ice.
