Mike's Mix: Young Joni

Each week, Mike Augustyniak finds a new cocktail from a local mixologist. This week, he heads to northeast Minneapolis to try a twist on a well-loved cocktail.

Young Joni Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac
  • ¼ oz Chamomile syrup *
  • 2 Dashes Bittercube Bolivar Bitters

*To make Chamomile syrup; prepare Chamomile tea. Add an equal part of sugar to the tea, and continue heating until sugar is dissolved. Cool and use, or store.

Instructions:

Combine in a mixing glass, add ice, stir, strain over ice (a larger piece works the best for the longevity of the cocktail!). Garnish with an orange peel.

Passive-Aggressive from Young Joni (credit: CBS)

Passive-Aggressive

  • 1 ½ oz Letherbee Original Gin
  • ½ oz Orgeat syrup
  • ½ oz fresh Lemon Juice
  • ½ oz Amontillado Sherry
  • 1 Dash Black Pepper tincture
  • Angostura Bitters

* To make Black Pepper tincture: steep black peppercorns in everclear for up to 2 weeks; strain to remove peppercorns and use sparingly.

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients except Angostura Bitters in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously to break up the cubes. pour directly into a tall glass without straining. Top with crushed ice. Garnish with a few dashes of Angostura Bitters and a healthy mint sprig.
