Mike's Mix: Hennepin Avenue Exile @ The Lowry

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Mike Augustyniak has been mixing at some classic, old-school bars--places that feel like home for the holidays. This week, Mike headed to The Lowry in Uptown.

Hennepin Avenue Exile

Start by garnishing a coupe glass with ½ rim of sugar, and a small wedge of lemon rind.

Then combine in a mixing glass:

- 1.5 oz bourbon (The Lowry uses Four Roses)
- ¾ oz dry curacao
- ¾ oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
- ¼ oz honey simple syrup (recipe follows)

Add ice & shake. Strain into the garnished coupe glass.

To make the honey simple syrup: In a saucepan, bring 1 part honey and 1 part water to a boil. Stir, cool, and refrigerate (if desired).

Taste Test

There's a little choose-your-own-adventure going on with the Hennepin Avenue Exile, as sipping from the sugar-rimmed part of the glass will (obviously) give a sweeter taste than the plain rim. Simple syrup made from honey is the other sweetener, but doesn't overpower the already-balanced combination of bourbon, orange, and lemon. Think of this drink as an introduction to bourbon that tastes a lot like a Sidecar.
