MCAD Holding Annual Scholarship Art Auction

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - It's a big night for local art enthusiasts.

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is hosting their annual auction Friday night.

"We're excited to share it with the community," MCAD associate vice president of institutional advancement Cindy Theis said.

The Auction at MCAD is in its third year and features more than 50 pieces of original artwork. Alumni return to their roots to sell their artwork and give back to their school.

"We ask those artists to contribute these so that we can raise the scholarship funds," MCAD president Jay Coogan said.

Last year's auction raised more than $150,000 in scholarships.

Theis has worked at MCAD for 26 years. She says the auction is fun for those who attend and bid, and meaningful to the artists.

"They come back and it's their own mini reunion," Theis said.

The pieces are one of a kind, meaning they're not cheap. Last year, a painting sold for $13,000.

The auction offers the chance to bring original artwork home while helping along the world's future artists.

"I guarantee you this night ends and you can't help but smile because this will be a banner year," Theis said.
