Maplewood Police: Man Fatally Shot Inside Home Was Targeted

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police say a man who was shot and killed inside his Maplewood home early Saturday morning was targeted by the suspect.

The shooting happened at about 4:45 a.m. on the 2200 block of Hazel Street, according to Maplewood police. The suspect gained entrance to the home and fired a single shot, hitting and killing a 31-year-old man who lived there.

"Ultimately there was a brief verbal exchange between suspect and victim the details we don't know at this time," Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said.

The victim's girlfriend, who was in a different part of the home during the shooting, called police. She was not injured. Police blocked off the area to search for the shooter -- who is still at large.

About a mile south, Police were called to another home a few hours later after a man noticed a handgun laying in his driveway.

"It could be involved or connected to this incident," Schnell said.

Police say the house hasn't had any trouble in the past, and they're hoping someone will come forward with information.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.
