Woman dead, suspect injured following shooting at Maplewood apartment, police say
A woman is dead and a man is in custody with injuries following a shooting in a Maplewood apartment that prompted a shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning.
According to Maplewood police, officers and fire crews responded at 10:44 a.m. to an apartment on the 2500 block of Ivy Avenue East on the report of gunshots and a person lying on the ground.
When officers arrived, they found a 55-year-old woman in the hallway with wounds believed to be from gunshots, police said. She was taken from the scene to safety and given first aid. She was later declared dead at Regions Hospital. She was later identified as Amy Doverspike.
Police say they believed an armed man in his 50s was possibly inside the victim's apartment, so they established a perimeter, evacuated neighboring units and issued a shelter-in-place order.
Numerous agencies responded. The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office SWAT team later entered the apartment and located the man, who officials believe had shot himself. He was given medical aid and also taken to Regions Hospital. His current condition is unknown.
The relationship between the victim and the suspected shooter has not been released. According to Maplewood police, the 57-year-old man from St. Paul was charged with second-degree murder by the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.
