Many Local Businesses Relieved After Major Snowfall

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The winter storm that finally brought a significant snowfall to the Twin Cities is whipping up a flurry of business. From hardware stores to ski slopes, owners are happy to no longer be feeling the cold shoulder from winter.

Whatever the reason for a trip to Settergren's of Linden Hills hardware store, today it likely has to do with snow. Owner Mark Settergren has been on a cycle of stocking and re-stocking the shelves all week.

"We finally got some snow and cold weather. So it's been really good business, pretty much selling anything that's related to snow," he said.

From shovels to sleds, snow goods are finally getting snatched up. On the slopes, Wayne Iseri of Elm Creek Winter Recreation Area is thrilled not only for snow, but for colder weather.

"Just in the last week or so, the weather and cold temps have allowed us to turn on all of our snow guns," Iseri said.

Though they've been making snow since early December, Iseri says having it in our own backyards gives us a signal that's it's time to get out and play.

"You gotta have snow," he said. "That's part of Minnesota -- ice and snow and cold."

Settergren says that's good for business.

"I'm a strong believer in snow and how it affects our economy," he said. "There's hardly anybody in the state of Minnesota that it doesn't trickle down to when we get snow. Minnesota without snow is like California without sun."

The tubing hill at Elm Creek Winter Recreation Area in Maple Grove is not open yet, but they plan on partially opening it just in time for the New Year's weekend. Just be sure to check online before making your trip out.
