Mankato Church Welcomes Pokemon Go Users

MANKATO, Minn. (WCCO) -- By now you've heard the stories about people getting into accidents or falling while playing Pokemon Go.

It happens when people are so fixed walking and watching their phones hoping to catch a Pokemon character during the game. Now a Mankato church is using the craze to find new followers.

The Messiah Lutheran Church has a cooler of free beverages between two of its Pokestops with increased points for trainers.

"Hopefully people at least see that this is a welcoming place, and that they are more likely to venture inside and just get to know us," Associate Pastor Jerod Freeberg said.

The church is hosting events for all players. The hope is to encourage them to find a higher power -- that is, higher than Pikachu.
