Man Sentenced In Hubbard Co. Drag Racing Incident

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A man was sentenced in Hubbard County for drag racing while drunk after an incident that left a woman severely injured.

Mitchell Lee Dirks was sentenced to six years probation.

Dirks pleaded guilty on Jan. 15 to a count of criminal vehicle operation involving great bodily harm to another and a count of gross misdemeanor driving while impaired.

According to the Hubbard County Attorney's Office, Dirks was involved in a drag racing incident on Aug. 9, 2014.

While driving, Dirks went over 100 mph and lost control of the vehicle.

The car rolled several times and both he and his female passenger were ejected from the car.

Officials said the female passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and was air lifted to a Twin Cities hospital.

Dirks provided a blood sample three to four hours after the accident. His BAC was 0.14 percent.

The driver of the car Dirks was racing left the scene before help arrived without notifying authorities, officials said.
