Man Gets 27 Years In Prison For Strangling Mom's Boyfriend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 26-year-old Babbitt, Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for strangling his mother's boyfriend to death.

In April, Shawn Russel Doherty pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder in a plea deal with the St. Louis County Attorney's Office.

Doherty admitted to killing 55-year-old Paul Bulen, of Mahtomedi, at his mother's home on Jan. 13, 2014.

Bulen was later found unconscious on a road near Doherty's home.

"There is no consequence for the defendant that can make up for the loss of Paul Bulen's life," assistant St. Louis County attorney Michelle Anderson said. "The victims can't get back what was lost. I am deeply saddened for the suffering the defendant has caused Paul Bulen's friends and family and I expressed my support to them."
