Man Arrested Following Coon Rapids Shoe Store Robbery

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police have taken a man into custody following a shoe store robbery and hostage situation in Coon Rapids.

The incident happened at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday at a Payless Shoes store on the 8500 block of Springbrook Drive Northwest.

Employees pushed the hold-up alarm, saying a man confronted them who may have had a gun.

Police arrived and saw a man walking out of the store who then ducked back inside. After several minutes of negotiation over the phone, police said the man agreed to come out unarmed, but with a hostage.

Ultimately, though, the man came out by himself and gave up.

Officers said he had bound one of two employees with duct tape, but neither of the workers were hurt.

The 38-year-old man in custody is from Minneapolis, but police have not released his name.
