Man and his dog fatally struck by motorist in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Police in St. Paul say a man and his dog are dead after a motorist struck them Sunday evening.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Maryland Avenue West and Park Street.

Officers arrived and located the injured man and dog, who both died at the scene. Police identified the victims Tuesday as 64-year-old Steven Wirtz and his 2-year-old German Shepherd.

Police say Wirtz, who was a St. Paul resident, and his dog were crossing Maryland Avenue when they were struck by an eastbound Ford Taurus. The driver stopped after the collision and is cooperating with investigators.

The crash is still under investigation, and police say no arrests have been made.
