Man Accused Of Smothering Girlfriend's 3-Month-Old

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A White Bear Lake man is accused of smothering his girlfriend's 3-month-old daughter.

According to the criminal complaint, Bryan Gustafson, 27, wanted the baby to stop crying so he could watch the Meryl Streep movie "It's Complicated."

Gustafson is charged with second-degree murder in the infant's April 2014 death.

He told police he found the baby in the crib not breathing the morning of April 30.

But the Ramsey County medical examiner found the cause of death to be oxygen deprivation and "homicidal violence." Bruises to the baby's back were consistent with fingers applying excessive force, and there were also injuries consistent with spanking.

The criminal complaint claims that since Steve Martin was on Gustafson's television when police arrived, it means he was lying about the timeline of when he checked on the baby.

The baby died on May 4, 2014, after four days on life support.

A warrant has been issued for Gustafson's arrest. Those with information about his whereabouts are asked to call 651-429-8511.
