Malayan Tapir Calf Makes First Public Appearance At Minnesota Zoo

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A baby animal is scheduled to make his public debut at the Minnesota Zoo Wednesday.

The endangered Malayan tapir calf was born at the end of July. The zoo said he sort of resembles a furry watermelon with legs.

There are fewer than 1,500 Malayan tapirs left in the wild. Deforestation and dam building are destroying their habitat in Southeast Asia.

The tapir calf makes his debut from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and can be seen from 9 to 10 a.m. daily after that, with time increasing as he gets older.

The zoo does have a live webcam showing the calf, however you do need Internet Explorer to watch.
