Luxury Meets History At James J. Hill House Holiday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Vast expanses of lacquered wood, pinafores, petticoats, a picturesque vantage of an Industrial Age metropolis.

That's just some of what you'll see this year at the Hill House Holidays at the James J. Hill House in St. Paul.

The house was built in 1891 by James J. Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway.

He lived there with his wife and eight of his ten children for a 30-year period.

"Our signature event is called Hill House Holidays," a staffer said. "It's like a play that goes through the house, talking about the upstairs-downstairs life. You find out what it was like being in a house like this--the Christmas traditions that they celebrated seen through the eyes of the servants."

Hill House Holiday runs Saturday and Sunday afternoons this weekend and next.

It's $9 for adults, with discounts for kids and seniors.
