Loving Yourself: North Mpls. Hosts Event Focused On Women's Health
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Heritage Park Senior Services Center in north Minneapolis is hosting a gathering Wednesday focused on African-American women's health. The event, called Loving Yourself, is described as an "intergenerational gathering of black women."
The event offers free health screenings and on-site mammography. There will also be discussions on cancer, diabetes, fitness, and heart health.
"Women have traditionally been the thread of our families," said Henry Crosby, the executive director of Heritage Park. "And Neighborhood Healthsource thought this would be a great way to build awareness for the community of color here in the Twin Cities northside."
The event, hosted by Neighborhood Healthsource Clinic, will have 19 vendors and exhibitors and guest speakers.
It's being held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Park Senior Services Center on 1015 4th Ave. N. The $28 million campus serves seniors, 50 years and older, on the city's north side.
Crosby says the goal is to get those aging in the African-American community to understand their health and raise awareness of the new facility.
"There's a large population of mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters here and speaking about health and wellness is important to everything we do," Crosby said.
Gail Skoglund, the director of adult day services for Augustana Open Circle, said women are raised to be caregivers, and during the caregiving they often neglect themselves.
This event will give women the "opportunity to remove those barriers" and talk about women's health, she said.
