Local Comedy Club Helps Raise Money To Honor Fallen Aitkin Co. Sheriff's Investigator

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A local comedy club is raising funds to help the Aitkin County Sheriff's Department honor one of their fallen deputies.

On Oct. 18, 2015, Investigator Steve Sandberg was killed after being shot by the man he was guarding inside a St. Cloud hospital room.

Sandberg, 60, was guarding over Danny Leroy Hammond, 50, who was receiving medical attention after an earlier domestic dispute.

According to authorities, Hammond, who had not been restrained to his bed, was able to wrestle Sandberg's gun away from him. Hammond then shot and killed Sandberg.

In May, Sandberg will be honored in a ceremony held during Police Week in Washington D.C. A Go Fund Me account has been set up with a goal of $20,000 to help send members of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office to the ceremony.

Now, Lilydale's Joke Joint Comedy Club is helping to reach this goal.

On March 31, Joke Joint is hosting a comedy show featuring Tommy Rymann and Dale Cheesman. All ticket sales will be donated to the Aitkin County Sheriff's Department.

The show will take place at 8 p.m. on March 31. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased online.

According to the Go Fund Me page, any funds raised over the goal will go toward creating a permanent memorial at the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office.
