Lightning causes house fire in Washington County

GRANT, Minn. -- Officials say a lightning strike caused a house fire in Washington County Wednesday morning.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received a call just after 1 a.m. from a homeowner who reported hearing lightning followed by a strong smell of gas on the 11000 block of Great Oak Trail North.

Officers arrived on the scene and located a fire inside the home.

Crews remain on the scene as of 11 a.m. working to extinguish the fire. Water had to be brought in by a tanker shuttle due to the home's location in a district without fire hydrants.

Two adults in the house were able to evacuate safely with their pets. No injuries have been reported.

The home is a total loss, the Mahtomedi Fire Department said.

The sheriff's office said it also responded to down trees and power outages after storms moved through the area in the overnight and early morning hours.
