Klobuchar, Sen. Democrats Stress Constitutional Duty To Fill SCOTUS Vacancy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Senate democrats are stressing their constitutional responsibility to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

They met with legal scholars from across the country Wednesday to talk about what an obstruction would mean for the justice system.

Democrats say leaving a seat open until *after the election would be longest vacancy on the high court in the last century.

Senator Amy Klobuchar says it all comes down to what's in our constitution. She's confident President Barack Obama will make a nomination despite pushback from Republicans.

"What really matters to me is what other congresses have done through wars, World War 1, World War 2, the Vietnam War, through civil rights disputes, major conflicts in this country," Klobuchar said. "We've always made sure the Supreme Court was fully staffed and we have a solemn duty – a constitutional duty – to do that."

Republicans have vowed to block any of President Obama's nominations.
